|Chocolate ice cream is far more likely to result in an orgasmic birth!|
My friend recently alerted me to this ABC News Report about orgasmic childbirth. Yes, apparently there are some women who, through the power of visualisation, find childbirth so enjoyable they have an orgasm during labour. Wow. I will warm you, the couple who are the subject of this report are insufferably smug about their sex life, which shouldn't be much of a surprise.
I like to think of myself as a fairly open-minded, liberal sort but the thought of being in such a sexual state in front of the staff of Edinburgh's Royal Infirmary doesn't do it for me at all. However it's worth watching this report and bearing in mind how the attitude to childbirth in the UK has changed a lot over the past decade or so. The emphasis here, unlike what the reporter refers to in some parts of the US, is birthing in various positions and for this to be a more mobile experience than lying on your back pushing to the ceiling.
Although I'm not into holistic or new age approaches to childbirth I don't believe it always has to be a purely medical experience either and at six and a half months pregnant I'm fascinated, looking forward to it and scared about the birth experience at the same time. One thing that's definitely helped me prepare for it is watching One Born Every Minute and seeing how happy the Mum and Dads are and how quick the pain is forgotten about once the baby is out and ok.
So no, I won't be aiming for orgasm at the point of childbirth but best of luck to those who do. After all, it's probably a while till you have one afterwards!
